Proverbs 25:8 Meaning Don’t Be Hasty in Bringing Charges

Don’t be hasty in bringing charges to court. What will you do in the end when your neighbor shames you?

What does Proverbs 25:8 mean?

A mind rushes into conflict when it is certain the fault lies outside itself, and this haste is the surest sign it is looking at its own guilt in a mirror. The neighbor who seems to shame it is only reflecting back the accusation the mind first threw.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind rushes into conflict when it is certain the fault lies outside itself, and this haste is the surest sign it is looking at its own guilt in a mirror. The neighbor who seems to shame it is only reflecting back the accusation the mind first threw. When a mind pauses before it strives and asks what teacher moved it to attack, the quarrel it was so eager to begin loses its cause, for there was never anything out there to conquer.

What the mind hurries to fight is its own fear wearing another face.

Neighbor: the brother who appears to threaten, in truth the mirror in which the mind meets the guilt it has not owned.

  1. When a message lands wrong and your thumbs are already moving, close the app and wait an hour. Read it again later and see if the attack was ever really in the words.
  2. Before you tell someone off, ask yourself what you are afraid they are right about. Say that part out loud instead, and the fight usually dissolves.
  3. In traffic or a long line, when someone cuts in and heat rises in your chest, let the first reaction pass without acting on it. The anger is yours, and so is the choice to put it down.

What am I accusing someone else of that I have not yet looked at in myself?

The same truth in other traditions

Dhammapada

The one who holds "he wronged me, he hurt me" keeps the anger alive by holding it. Put the thought down and the quarrel has nothing left to stand on.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

It is not the other person's act that harms you but your own judgment about it. Drop the judgment and the injury goes with it.

Tao Te Ching 73

The one who rushes to act, acts blindly. Stillness sees the whole shape of a thing before a single move is made.
