Revelation 2:2 · World English Bible

Revelation 2:2 Meaning I Know Your Works

I know your works, and your toil and perseverance, and that you can’t tolerate evil men, and have tested those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and found them false.

What does Revelation 2:2 mean?

An inner testing power weighs everything a person produces and every claim that arises within. The voice that says it knows the works is the higher awareness reading the whole activity of the self, its toil and its endurance, straight to the root.

Esoteric

An inner testing power weighs everything a person produces and every claim that arises within. The voice that says it knows the works is the higher awareness reading the whole activity of the self, its toil and its endurance, straight to the root. Nothing offered escapes this seeing.

Those who call themselves apostles but are not are the counterfeit inner authorities, thoughts that present themselves as sent from the higher self yet carry no true commission. To try them and find them liars is the discernment that tests each claimant and exposes the false teacher within. What reads as praise for a church is the awakened center in a person distinguishing its genuine messengers from the impostors that pose as truth and cannot survive the weighing.

Live Revelation 2:2 today

  1. Catch one of your certain thoughts today and ask where it actually came from. The ones that announce themselves the most loudly are usually the thinnest.
  2. When someone speaks with total confidence in a meeting or a thread, stay friendly and ask one specific question. Confidence and accuracy are different things, and the question tells you which you are looking at.
  3. Under pressure, do not act on the first voice that sounds urgent and sure of itself. Give it sixty seconds, and see whether it is still saying the same thing.

Which voice in my head have I been obeying without ever checking its credentials?

Buddhism · Kalama Sutta

Do not accept a teaching because of who said it or how confidently. Test it against your own experience and see whether it actually leads to less harm, and then decide.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He warned that the loudest voice claiming authority is often the least examined one, including the voice in your own head. Question the impression before you obey it.

Zen

If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him. Whatever inside you starts wearing the robes of final authority is exactly the thing to look at hardest.
