Revelation 2:4 Meaning But I Have This Against You
But I have this against you, that you left your first love.

Revelation 2:4 · World English Bible
But I have this against you, that you left your first love.
The first love is the original attachment of consciousness to its own source, the pull toward the light that a person feels before the world crowds it out. To leave it is to let the mind drift outward into things and habits until the inner flame that once burned clearly grows cold and forgotten.

ESOTERIC
The first love is the original attachment of consciousness to its own source, the pull toward the light that a person feels before the world crowds it out. To leave it is to let the mind drift outward into things and habits until the inner flame that once burned clearly grows cold and forgotten. The whole trouble named here is the cooling of that early fire, the way the light at the center dims not because it fails but because attention turns away from it toward the surfaces of life.
What is missing in a person is not effort or activity but the warmth of that first turning inward, the direct devotion to the spirit that was strong at the beginning and has since faded under the weight of the outer world.
First love: the original devotion of consciousness to its own source, the early inward fire before the world dims it
Esoteric lens
What did I love first, and when did I last give it any of my attention?
The reed flute cries because it remembers the reed bed it was cut from. That ache for the source is not a weakness, it is the thread back.
The advice is to return to the beginner's state, soft and open like an infant, because the early simplicity knew something the accumulated cleverness has forgotten.
In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's mind there are few. The task is to keep the first mind alive inside the practiced one.
