Revelation 5:1 · World English Bible

Revelation 5:1 Meaning I Saw

I saw, in the right hand of him who sat on the throne, a book written inside and outside, sealed shut with seven seals.

What does Revelation 5:1 mean?

The book is the self, and it is written on both sides, within and on the back, meaning the whole record of a person is inscribed in him, the seen face and the hidden reverse. It rests in the right hand of the one on the throne, held by the ruling center of the being.

The book is the self, and it is written on both sides, within and on the back, meaning the whole record of a person is inscribed in him, the seen face and the hidden reverse. It rests in the right hand of the one on the throne, held by the ruling center of the being. Yet it stays closed under 7 seals, and the number 7 stands for a full set of inner locks, the states of consciousness a person must open in turn before the meaning of his own life can be read. What is sealed is not far off in heaven; it is the shut inner content of the reader himself, waiting to be opened from within.

Book: the self written on both sides, the full inner record of a person, seen face and hidden reverse alike 7 seals: the complete set of inner locks, the levels of consciousness that must each be opened before the self can be read Throne: the ruling center of the being, the seat from which the whole person is governed

Live Revelation 5:1 today

  1. Write down one thing about yourself you have never quite looked at directly. Not to fix it today, just to open the page.
  2. Ask someone close to you what they see in you that you might not see in yourself. Then listen without arguing.
  3. When something gets under your skin today out of all proportion, treat that as a page in you being turned rather than as a problem with the other person. The size of the reaction is the clue.

What have you been carrying inside you that you have never let yourself read?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

The teachers point you back at yourself: the answer you are chasing in books was already written in you before you learned to read. The whole of practice is opening what you are carrying.

Sufism · Rumi

In the Masnavi Rumi tells of a man who travels far chasing a dream of treasure, only to be sent home and told to dig under his own house. What he crossed the world for was buried where he started.

Hinduism · Chandogya Upanishad

The teaching tat tvam asi, you are that, says the reality you have been looking for everywhere is the same as what you already are. The seeking ends when the seal breaks.
